چکیده

We consider a model for to evaluate performance of streaming media over an unreliable network. Our model consists of a tandem of two fluid queues. The first fluid queue is a Markov Modulated fluid queue that models the network congestion, and the second queue represents the play-out buffer. For this model the distribution of the total amount of fluid in the congestion and play-out buffer corresponds to the distribution of the maximum attained level of the first buffer. We show that, under proper scaling and when we let time go to infinity, the distribution of the total amount of fluid converges to a Gumbel extreme value distribution. From this result, we derive a simple closed-form expression for the initial play-out buffer level that provides a probabilistic guarantee for undisturbed play-out. 1 Motivation and literature Over the past few years, the tremendous popularity of smart phone end devices and services (like Youtube) has boosted the demand for streaming media applications offered via the Internet. A Spectral Theory Approach for Extreme Value Analysis in a Tandem of Fluid Queues

In Chapter 2 we studied a model for a constant bit-rate video stream over an IP network with a play-out buffer at the client side. The network is modeled as a Markov Modulated fluid queue in which a CTMC determines the actual transmission rate through the network. For the play-out buffer we derived an initial buffer level binit such that the probability that the video will stall during play-out...

On Generalization of Sturm-Liouville Theory for Fractional Bessel Operator

In this paper, we give the spectral theory for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a boundary value problem consisting of the linear fractional Bessel operator. Moreover, we show that this operator is self-adjoint, the eigenvalues of the problem are real, and the corresponding eigenfunctions are orthogonal. In this paper, we give the spectral theory for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions...

On tandem blocking queues with a common retrial queue

We consider systems of tandem blocking queues having a common retrial queue. The model represents dynamics of short TCP transfers in the Internet. Analytical results are available only for a specific example with two queues in tandem. We propose approximation procedures involving simple analytic expressions, based on mean value analysis (MVA) and on fixed point approach (FPA). The mean sojourn ...

AN APPROACH TOWARDS WAVE CLIMATE STUDY IN THE PERSIAN GULF AND THE GULF OF OMAN: SIMULATION AND VALIDATION

This article describes the 11-year wave simulation (1992-2002) in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman using the input data derived from European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The ECMWF 10 meter wind field and spectral wave boundary condition at 18 ْN degree are input into one of the latest versions of numerical wave models (3rd generation) after a few local modifications. ...

تعیین پاسخ سکوهای نیمه مغروق در برابر امواج خطی به روش تقریبی

Development of a simple fast-solving method based on the popular Morrison approach for prediction of semi-submersibles' motion response is the main purpose of the current research. The oblique seas' hydrodynamic specifications are modeled using small amplitude wave theory. The velocity forces and moments have been shown to be small and are therefore neglected. The damping coefficients are obtai...
